March 25, 2018 is the date for the next LIS Super Seawatch, at more than 100 locations around the perimeter of LIS Long Island Sound, on both the CT and NY sides. This late March bird count aims to capture a baseline snapshot of LIS birds now, 2017 and 2018, to be used for comparisons in future years and decades...

OUR RECENT POST ON CT BIRDS LISTSERV:

"As you know, in late March (this Sunday 3/25) we run a number of seawatches
around the perimeter of LIS Long Island Sound. Relying on volunteers from
last year, we have primary coverage of the main locations overlooking LIS.
If you are birding on Sunday and see any rarities or unusually large
numbers of gulls or other birds in LIS, please submit an eBird report, and
SHARE it with this account: "LIS seawatch" AND write your name in the
comments since eBird does not export birder names when we do an extract
from their central database."

Summer Bird Counts 2020

UPDATE, DECEMBER 16, 2020: ALL 8 SBC COUNTS WERE CONDUCTED, in June. ALL 8 OF THE 8 SBC RESULTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED AS OF NOVEMBER, for compilation into our CT statewide database. The 8 compilers are verifying the numbers in our data entry table currently (December). After that, Compilation will proceed during January.

We will go ahead with the 2020 SBC Summer Bird Counts in CT, unless the pandemic situation gets markedly worse by early June. We expect all SBC participants to follow the safety guidelines listed in the post on the left (in blue), and not to participate if they believe they are ill or will be at any risk.

DATES for the 2020 SBCs:

All these dates were agreed to during March.

In May all 8 compilers agreed to do their counts in June.

JUNE 13-14:

Summer Bird Counts 2019

This request was made in mid-May 2019. Since then we have received all eight SBC reports, and assembled them into our new database, which will go online within about a month.

I will make copies and forward them to Joe, Patrick and whoever needs them, including the Archive at UConn, which is being established at UConn. I will also keep another copy for the state-wide SBC team (J.Zeranski, P.Comins, T.Robben, et al). A centralized SBC database is under construction. More on that later.

COA Bird Data Archive

COA is starting a new Bird Data ARCHIVE for the safekeeping of important bird data, so that it will be available for future scientists, and future generations.

Some of your personal bird data may be valuable but not be secure and safe from possible loss.

So, if you think you have any valuable data, please contact us soon, and lets discuss.
If we agree that you have some especially valuable data, we would ask you to give us a copy of it (or bequeath it to COA) to put it in our new Bird Data ARCHIVE for safekeeping.
